COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE

1. Task

A local mental health service of Ashburn, Ga. This organization teaches people with mental disabilities to function on their own in society. They help with job preparation and employment opportunities; they help with Dr. appointments, and financial responsibilities.

2. Moultrie Technical College

Moultrie Tech has a GED program in Ashburn at the Community Service Center. This would be a great partner for the communities of practice because the parent’s education could be the link to the children's education.

3. Parent Involvement Council

This organization is headed by Turner County Connection/Communities in Schools of Turner County. This group meets once a month to brainstorm and come up with solutions to get parents involved in their children's education.

These three interested me because they could possibly the link for me to get parents to understand that they are their children’s first and most important teacher.

A job opportunity that I would love would be through my church's childcare facility. Now this facility is not in existence yet, but we are believing by faith that it will manifest soon. One of the desires that I have for the center would include a program for parents that would assist them in getting their GED or completing high school. It would also provide class room training for the parents. This training would teach parents how to teach their children at home and demonstrate to the parents the proper teaching techniques that could be used. It would serve to give parents fresh and new ways of teaching their children.

  1. Hi Melanie,

I enjoyed reading about your Communities of Practices. I think that is wonderful to have a Parent Involvement Council. I agree with you that parents really need to realize that they are their children's first teacher. It is wonderful to have a GED Program for adults. We have an adult Literacy Program that is necessary for parents who do not know how to read. You have very important Communities of Practices and a wonderful background.

    1. Yes Mam, that is what we are seeking through our church ministry. We want to get to the root of the problem to see the results that we are hoping for.

  2. Hello Melanie,
I appreciate that you have a desire to help parents without GED and high school diploma to have it. I am also interested in helping families with a high school diploma to have one in order to be efficient enough for them to take care of their children. By improving the rate at which parents are educated that will help communities to be more productive.

    2. Absolutely, I want to see change in our families and how they are educated. It is so important to me to get the parents to understand that it is not all of the schools responsibilty to teach their children. They must start at home to get the much need results.
